This weekend sees Hoedspruit hosting their annual “wildsfees”. I would think the closest translation would be “game festival” with game being wild animals although there will be lots of games too.
The Hoedspruit Wildsfees is the oldest festival held in the lowveld region. It was traditionally formed around the holding of annual game auctions in the days of individual and fenced in reserves where game movements were achieved through the buying and selling of various game. The auction still occurs on the Friday afternoon although on a far smaller scale than in years previous.
Built around this a 2 day festival with stalls exhibitions, and other activities are held showcasing various aspects within the community.
Musicians such as Hugo, Heinz Winkler, MD Greyling and Andrew Roos will be singing. Apparently there will be lots to see and do. Game drives, aeroplane flips, fun runs, mountain biking, horse riding, volleyball, 4×4 routes and lots of entertainment. There are guesthouses to rent in the Blyde Wildlife Estate as well as 300 camping sites available so if you find yourself at a loose end, why don’t you join us at the festival.
This will be my first ‘wildsfees’ and I am going with an open mind. I hear that last year it was not so good but its being held at a different spot this year. I am looking forward to the potjiekos (venison stews made in a big black pot on an open fire).
I’m game – are you? 🙂
